The War of the Worlds broadcast
Orson Welles 'reports the news' of a Martian invasion

On 30 October 1938, the eve of Halloween, 23-year-old Orson Welles staged H. G. Wells's novel live on CBS as a string of breaking-news bulletins. The legend of nationwide panic is greatly exaggerated: newspapers inflated it, and historians still argue over how many listeners were really fooled.
