New shoes bought in Rome gave Abebe Bikila blisters, so on 10 September 1960 he ran the Olympic marathon barefoot. The imperial guardsman finished first by the Arch of Constantine in world-record time, Ethiopia's first Olympic champion. Four years later in Tokyo he won again, this time in shoes.
