Balfour Declaration
A British pledge at the root of the Palestine question

On 2 November 1917 British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour wrote to Lord Rothschild pledging support for 'a national home for the Jewish people' in Palestine, provided nothing prejudiced the civil and religious rights of its non-Jewish communities, then about 90% of the population. The pledge was written into the League of Nations Mandate for Palestine; the parties to the conflict still view it in sharply different ways.
