Battle of Chesma
A Russian squadron burns the Ottoman fleet off Anatolia
During the Russo-Turkish War, squadrons under Alexei Orlov and Grigory Spiridov sailed from the Baltic to the Aegean and on the night of 7 July 1770 used fireships to burn the Ottoman fleet trapped in Çeşme Bay. It was the Russian navy's first show of strength in the Mediterranean.
