The Epic of Manas is first written down
An epic almost 20 times the Iliad and Odyssey combined
For centuries the Kyrgyz passed down orally the epic of the hero Manas and his descendants, with bards singing it over weeks. Chokan Valikhanov wrote down the first episode in 1856, and Sayakbay Karalaev's version runs to about half a million lines, one of the longest epics on Earth.
