Great Smog of London
Coal smoke chokes the capital and leads to a Clean Air Act

From 5 to 9 December 1952 still air trapped coal smoke over London, cutting visibility to a few metres. Later estimates put the death toll at up to 10,000–12,000. The disaster led to the Clean Air Act of 1956, in the first year of Elizabeth II's reign.
