Instant noodles are invented
A bankrupt 48-year-old invents instant ramen

Momofuku Ando had lost his company and was starting over with a small family firm in Ikeda. After months of trials he hit on flash-frying cooked noodles, and on 25 August 1958, aged 48, launched the first instant noodles, Chikin Ramen. He lived to 96 and said he ate them almost every day.
