Forced sedentarisation of the nomads, collectivisation and the seizure of livestock wiped out nearly all of Kazakhstan's herds within three years. An estimated 1.5–2.3 million people died — about 38% of all Kazakhs — hundreds of thousands fled to China and neighbouring republics, and Kazakhs became a minority in their own land.
