Treaty of Lausanne
Turkey secures the borders it still holds today

On 24 July 1923 Turkey signed a peace at Lausanne with the Allied powers and Greece, replacing the punitive Treaty of Sèvres. Victory in the War of Independence let the Kemalists win recognition of almost all of Turkey's present borders and the abolition of the capitulations. A separate convention confirmed a population exchange: about 1.2 million Orthodox Christians left Turkey and some 400,000 Muslims left Greece.
