Kenesary's Rebellion
Ablai's grandson raises the steppe against the end of the khans

The Russian Empire abolished the khans' power in the Middle (1822) and Junior (1824) Zhuzes and built forts across the steppe. Kenesary, Ablai's grandson, fought tsarist troops and Kokand for ten years and was elected khan in 1841. In 1847 his campaign against the Kyrgyz ended in defeat and death. Kazakhstan sees him as the last khan and a national hero; Kyrgyz memory, as an invader.
