Guru Gobind Singh founds the Khalsa
Why Sikh men are named Singh and wear the turban
At the Vaisakhi festival of 1699 the tenth Sikh Guru, Gobind Singh, called for volunteers ready to die for their faith; thus came the 'five beloved ones', the first members of the Khalsa. The initiated vowed to wear five articles of faith, including uncut hair and a dagger, and took the names Singh ('lion') and Kaur ('princess').
