After 35 are shot dead, Australia tightens its gun laws

On 28 April 1996 a gunman killed 35 people at the former convict settlement of Port Arthur in Tasmania, the deadliest mass shooting in Australian history. Within 12 days the governments of Australia agreed to ban automatic and semi-automatic rifles, and some 650,000 firearms were bought back.
