Oman takes Fort Jesus
The end of Portuguese rule on the Swahili coast

In March 1696 the fleet of Oman's Yaruba imams laid siege to the Portuguese Fort Jesus at Mombasa. The siege lasted almost three years, the garrison died of hunger and disease, and in December 1698 the fortress fell: the East African coast north of Mozambique passed to Oman.
