The end of the Tuvan People’s Republic

The Uryankhay region on the upper Yenisei belonged to the Qing Empire until 1912 and then became a Russian protectorate. In 1921 the Tuvan People’s Republic was proclaimed there, formally independent but recognised only by the USSR and Mongolia. In 1944, at the request of its leadership, it joined the USSR as an autonomous oblast; today it is the Republic of Tyva within Russia.
