The US Army Camel Corps
The US Army imports camels to tame the Wild West

On 14 May 1856, 34 camels bought by the US Army in the Middle East were unloaded in Texas; one had died on the voyage, but two were born. They coped superbly with the Southwest's deserts, yet the Army never adopted them, and after the Civil War they were auctioned off.
