Emperors reign but do not rule as warlords carve up the land

In 1769 Ras Mikael Sehul of Tigray had Emperor Iyoas I killed and turned the throne at Gondar into a plaything of the nobility. For nearly ninety years Ethiopia was in effect ruled by rival regional lords, the rases, while emperors, sometimes replaced several times a year, were puppets. The era ended in 1855, when Tewodros II reunited the country by force.
