Alash Autonomy
Kazakh intellectuals proclaim a state of their own
In December 1917 an all-Kazakh congress in Orenburg proclaimed the Alash Autonomy under Alikhan Bukeikhanov, with Semipalatinsk as its capital. In the Civil War the Alash Orda government first leaned on the Whites, then went over to the Bolsheviks; the autonomy was abolished in 1920. Most of its leaders died in Stalin's purges.
