Birth of bossa nova
Whispered samba that conquered the world
In 1958 guitarist João Gilberto recorded 'Chega de Saudade' by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, with a hushed voice and an unfamiliar guitar rhythm. Bossa nova, a blend of samba and cool jazz, was born. 'The Girl from Ipanema' became one of the most recorded songs ever, and the album Getz/Gilberto won the Grammy for Album of the Year.
