Death of Stalin
The ruler of three decades dies, opening a struggle for power
Joseph Stalin, who had led the USSR for about 30 years, died at his Kuntsevo dacha on 5 March 1953. An amnesty and the end of the 'Doctors' plot' case soon followed, and a power struggle in the leadership was won by Khrushchev.
