Disappearance of Flight 19
Five bombers vanish off Florida — and a legend is born
On 5 December 1945 five US Navy Avenger torpedo bombers vanished on a training flight over the Atlantic, and a flying boat sent to find them disappeared too — 27 men in all. Investigators blamed the leader for leading the flight out to sea, then softened it to ‘cause unknown’ — and the Bermuda Triangle legend was born.
