The Kon-Tiki expedition
Six men cross the Pacific on a balsa raft in 101 days

Thor Heyerdahl wanted to show that South Americans could have sailed to Polynesia. In April 1947 he and five companions left Peru on a balsa-log raft and covered 6,900 km in 101 days before smashing onto the reef of Raroia. All survived, and the film of the voyage won an Oscar.
