The Maracanazo
A record Maracanã crowd falls silent as Uruguay wins the Cup

On 16 July 1950 Brazil needed only a draw in the deciding World Cup match. The Maracanã held 173,850 paying fans, an all-time record, and perhaps 220,000 in all. Uruguay won 2–1, and Brazil later ditched its 'unpatriotic' white kit for yellow and green.
