Roswell incident
Army announces a ‘flying disc’ — then a weather balloon
In July 1947 debris was found on a ranch near Roswell and the air base told the press it had recovered a ‘flying disc’ — a day later it was called a weather balloon. In 1994 the US Air Force revealed the balloon belonged to Project Mogul, a secret effort to detect Soviet nuclear tests.
