Trieste reaches the Challenger Deep
Two men descend nearly 11 km to the bottom of the ocean

On 23 January 1960 the bathyscaphe Trieste, carrying Swiss Jacques Piccard and American Don Walsh, reached the floor of the Challenger Deep at about 10,916 m. It was designed by the pilot's father, Auguste Piccard. No one went back for 52 years, until director James Cameron in 2012.
