France conquers Cochinchina
French Indochina begins with the siege of Da Nang

In 1858 French and Spanish forces, claiming to protect missionaries, landed at Da Nang, and in 1859 they took Saigon. By the Treaty of Saigon of 1862 Emperor Tự Đức ceded three southern provinces to France — the first colony of future French Indochina.
