Nine hikers flee into the frost from a tent cut open from inside

Dyatlov Pass incident
Wikimedia Commons

In February 1959 nine skiers led by Igor Dyatlov died on the slope of Kholat Syakhl: their tent was slashed from inside and they fled into the frost in socks or barefoot. In 2020 Russian prosecutors named an avalanche as the cause, and in 2021 Swiss scientists showed a slab avalanche could explain some of the injuries.
