Native peoples drive the Spanish out of New Mexico for 12 years

In August 1680, at the signal of the leader Popé, the Pueblo peoples of New Mexico rose: they killed about 400 Spaniards, besieged Santa Fe and drove the colonists south to El Paso. The Spanish returned only in 1692.
