Xhosa Wars begin
A century of conflict on the Cape frontier

In 1779 the first of nine wars between the Xhosa people and colonists — first Dutch Boers, later the British — broke out along the Great Fish River. The Frontier Wars went on for a century and ended in 1879 with the Xhosa brought under the Cape Colony.
