An opera house in the Amazon
Rubber barons build an opera house in the jungle

Rubber-boom money built an opera house in Manaus, deep in the rainforest, which opened in 1896. Its roof tiles came from Alsace, its steel from Glasgow and its marble from Carrara, and the dome is clad in 36,000 tiles in the colours of the Brazilian flag.
