Armistice of Compiègne
At 11 a.m. on 11 November the guns fall silent

Early on 11 November 1918, in Marshal Foch's railway carriage, the German delegation signed the armistice: Germany was to leave occupied lands and the left bank of the Rhine, hand over its fleet and renounce Brest-Litovsk. In 1940 Hitler took France's surrender in the same carriage.
