Jack the Ripper murders
London papers turn an unknown killer into a celebrity

In the autumn of 1888 five women were murdered in London's poor Whitechapel district; the killer, dubbed Jack the Ripper by the papers, was never caught. It was one of the first crimes turned into a mass-media sensation, and over a hundred suspects have been named since.
