Novocherkassk founded
The Don Cossacks move their flood-prone capital to a hill
The old Cossack capital of Cherkassk flooded every spring, so in 1805 Ataman Matvei Platov founded a new town on a high hill. Novocherkassk became the capital of the Don Cossack Host and remained so until 1920.
