Andrianampoinimerina unites Imerina
The king for whom 'the sea is the edge of my rice field'

From about 1787 Andrianampoinimerina, ruler of Ambohimanga, began uniting the feuding Merina principalities and moved his capital to Antananarivo. His motto 'the sea is the border of my rice field' was fulfilled by his son Radama I, who brought most of Madagascar under Merina rule.
