Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen
“Men are born and remain free and equal in rights”
On 26 August 1789 France's National Constituent Assembly adopted a declaration of natural rights: liberty, property, security and resistance to oppression, equality before the law and the sovereignty of the nation. It underpinned French constitutions and became a model for declarations of rights around the world.
