Battle of the Somme

On 1 July 1916, the first day of the Somme offensive, the British Army lost about 57,000 men, nearly 20,000 of them killed — the worst day in its history. In four and a half months the Allies advanced about 10 km, and in September tanks went into battle here for the first time.
