Britain bans the slave trade
Parliament outlaws the slave trade across the empire

After twenty years of campaigning by abolitionists led by William Wilberforce, Parliament barred British ships from carrying slaves. The Royal Navy set up the West Africa Squadron to intercept slavers; slavery itself was abolished in the British colonies in 1833.
