Sent by Louis XVI, Lapérouse's scientific expedition sailed in three years from Alaska and Kamchatka to Australia; in 1788 the frigates Boussole and Astrolabe left Botany Bay and vanished. Only in 1826–1828 was their wreckage found off the island of Vanikoro.
