Rum Rebellion
Officers depose Governor Bligh — of Bounty fame

On 26 January 1808 officers of the New South Wales Corps under Major George Johnston arrested Governor William Bligh, who had tried to curb their trade in rum and land. It is the only successful armed takeover of government in Australia's history, and the second mutiny against Bligh, whose Bounty crew had rebelled in 1789.
