Gia Long unifies Vietnam
The Nguyễn, Vietnam's last dynasty, take the throne
Nguyễn Phúc Ánh, heir of the southern Nguyễn lords, defeated the Tây Sơn after a quarter-century of war, took Hanoi and in 1802 proclaimed himself Emperor Gia Long with his capital at Huế. From 1804 the country was called Việt Nam; the Nguyễn dynasty ruled until 1945.
