Lewis and Clark Expedition
Across the continent to the Pacific and back

Right after the Louisiana Purchase, President Jefferson sent Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the new lands. Over two-plus years their party, helped by the Shoshone woman Sacagawea, went up the Missouri, crossed the Rocky Mountains and reached the mouth of the Columbia on the Pacific.
