May Revolution
A Buenos Aires junta ousts the Spanish viceroy

On hearing that Seville had fallen to the French, the people of Buenos Aires deposed the Viceroy of the Río de la Plata on 25 May 1810 and set up the Primera Junta. Argentina dates its history from that day, although independence was declared only in 1816.
