Sultan Selim III launched the Nizam-ı Cedid reforms: European-trained regiments, new taxes to pay for them and the first permanent Ottoman embassies in European capitals. The Janissaries and clergy saw a threat; a Janissary revolt deposed Selim in 1807 and the new troops were disbanded.
