White Lotus Rebellion
A peasant war saps the strength of the Qing
The White Lotus sect raised the peasants of the hill country of Hubei, Sichuan and Shaanxi against taxes and official abuse. Crushing the rising took nearly a decade and enormous sums, and it is seen as the end of the Qianlong-era prosperity and the start of the Qing decline.
